Chapter 24

General Mark Weinstein tossed the newspaper onto his desk. Most people got their news from TV, or some media social thing. But he liked papers. Those other ways, there was a story for a few moments, and then it was on to the next story, with news anchors constantly talking over your thoughts or people sharing pictures of dogs into your feed. But with a paper, you could soak it in. You could come to terms with it; it wasn’t going anywhere. A headline could stare back at you for days, if you let it. The headline today read ‘PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST.’

He picked up the phone and dialed. It was answered after just two rings.

“Sam? It’s Mark. I guess you’ve seen the story.”

“I’ve seen it,” Samuel said. “What were they thinking?”

Mark shook his head. “I didn’t think they’d go through with it. If we had another Ben-Gurion to lead, this would never have happened. They think you can reason with these people. Like it’s some free-trade agreement, where you trade oil and they trade wheat.”

“So what does this mean for the OCS?”

“You know what it means, Sam.”

“But, I came here to practice.” Beth pulled her gun out of her purse. “I’m ready to go a bit farther, I think.”

“Sorry,” Samuel said. “We’re putting the training on hold for now, until we can figure things out a little.” He took off his glasses. “You’ve seen the news, haven’t you?”

“You mean the deal with Syria and Israel?”

“That’s the one. We were getting all geared up to go in there, to help sort things out. Now we don’t need to.”

“Why do you look so down about it? Isn’t this good? Peace in the Middle East, at last.”

“I wish it was that simple. But this deal, it’s not going to last. All you have to do is look at history. Look back a thousand years. Heck, look back twenty years.”

“We can hope, can’t we? Any deal for peace means less dead innocents, even if it’s only for a little while.”

“Like I said, it’s not that simple. These people aren’t interested in peace. You think somebody who would convince their son to blow themselves up in an elementary school wants peace? Their morals allow for endless, bloody expansion, and for peace as a means to trick your enemy.”

Beth put the gun back. Wasn’t this the whole point of what they were doing? Fighting to stop the violence? They should be throwing a party. “When they made this agreement,” she said, “they’re saying in their own words, ‘we are interested in peace.’ You can’t put words into their mouths and say they aren’t.”

“How many times has there been peace before, and then they’re launching rockets at Jerusalem?”

“Maybe if we had a little more faith in them, and supported them instead of building up our weapons during peacetime just in case, maybe if we all worked together, there might be a chance.”

“Lord willing, there will be peace,” he said.

“That’s more like it.”

He smiled. “But so far, the Lord hasn’t been willing.
